The global economic sanctions landscape continued to evolve during the first quarter of 2020. Key trends included:
OFAC sanctions grew by 1.7%, on pace with the 9% annualised growth rate in 2019.
OFAC regulatory priorities indicated continued divergence from EU, UN, and the broader international community, as the United States maintained pressure on Iran.
Sanctions activity by European Union (EU) and United Nations (UN) declined from late January. This coincided with the peak of the Coronavirus pandemic in China and its subsequent spread around the world.
The Coronavirus has not stopped regulatory activity outright; OFAC in particular continued to issue new sanctions.
